"Many have said they would join the club if they didn't have to have a MasterCard club membership card."

These words shone from a projection screen at the Sheppard Club during a luncheon Feb. 3, illustrating at least one reason why some eligible club members have elected not to join. The free buffet lunch was an effort to draw in potential members and announce new options for obtaining a club card.

As part of "U Choose," a program developed by the Headquarters of the Air Force Services Agency, those considering joining their officer's or enlisted club wouldn't necessarily have to apply for a MasterCard - or even any real credit card - to gain membership. The "U Choose" program will be tested at all Air Education and Training Command bases until June 30.

On a "special" MasterCard application, a choice for a separate Private Label card will be offered. The PL card would be issued, with no credit check, and club members would use the card for base, club or Services activities only.

While the PL card would not offer the benefits that come with true credit cards, such as emergency cash withdrawals or travel and renter insurance, certain discounts and benefits would be offered through the Services squadrons. For Sheppard, one such example would be usage points redeemable for Sheppard Club gift cards.

PL cards will have a $250-$500 limit, as opposed to the $1,000 credit line offered to MasterCard holders. Members who wish to carry only a PL card will be responsible for closing their MasterCard account, and will continue to receive statements until all payments are made.
