Flu shots available at base clinic Published Dec. 19, 2006 SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The flu vaccine is now available at the 82nd Medical Group Clinic. Although the flu shot is recommended to everyone, there are groups of people identified by the Center for Disease Control as high-risk for contracting influenza. The following is a list of high-risk groups: · People who are 50 years old or older are at higher risk of complications if they get the flu. · People with chronic (ongoing) or long-term health problems like diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, and asthma, are also more likely to have complications from the flu. If your immune system is weakened by long-term problems like cancer or HIV/AIDS, you also need a flu shot. · Pregnant women are at risk of complications and hospitalization if they get the flu. The influenza vaccine is safe for pregnant women and their babies. · Children under 5 years old have a high risk of emergency room visits and hospitalizations due to flu and should receive the flu shot. If you have any of the above conditions, go to your 82nd MDG primary care clinic and ask for the flu shot.
