When you put your uniform on every day and head to the flightline or the office, you have a clear mission and purpose - but what about at home? What's your family mission?

"Family Game Plan" - a new class at the Airman and Family Readiness Center - aims to help new and established families build a team mission statement and goals focused around their core family values.

"Ideally, the class will begin a life-long process of discovery and change," said course creator Karen Previe. "A family 'game plan' - just like in sports - will change as the team adapts and changes, but at the same time will help give each member of the family a clearer sense of unity and purpose."

The idea for the course came after Previe attended similar classes that helped her own family, and decided to build one specifically for military families.

"Families have always been an integral part of the success of our military," she said. "Strengthening the family core enhances the whole team. When military members feel accomplished in meeting their personal and family goals, it enhances their outlook and initiative in their profession as well."

Previe - who recently came to Sheppard's Airman and Family Readiness team - said her experience with the class has been extremely positive.

"Parents have told me the class helped them step away from the daily routine of 'raising kids' and broadened their perspective, so they started to see themselves as raising future adults," she said. "For young couples and even individuals who haven't had children, it helped them consider their future and see if their present actions were creating momentum toward their goals or delaying them."

The first "Family Game Plan" class will be held Sept. 29 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Airman and Family Readiness Center, Building 962. Sign up on Leadership Pathways or by calling (940) 676-4358. The class is intended for adults; child care is not provided.
