Air Education and Training Command deliberated over requirements, facilities, inspections and performance during the selection process before announcing the 90th Flying Training Squadron, 80th Flying Training Wing, Sheppard Air Force Base as the Top Operations Squadron Award winner, Flying Training Category, from Jan. 1, 2014 through Dec. 31, 2014.

The 90th FTS provides world-class instructor and student pilot training, producing 99 of the world's best combat and instructor pilots for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

The squadron directly contributed to the wing's "Highly Effective" rating in the 2014 headquarters AETC's first ever Unit Effectiveness Inspection with the most personnel recognized as a "Superior Performer" among the wing's four internationally-manned undergraduate flying training squadrons.

Additionally, its innovative class redistribution concept streamlined instructor pilot availability and cut flight cancellations by 50 percent.  The squadron was also picked to showcase the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training program to dignitaries, including the AETC Commander, Brazilian Defense Attache and a United States Senator.

The 90th FTS is a T-38 Talon Flying Training Squadron composed of 60 multinational personnel representing 13 signatory NATO nations. The squadron provides advanced jet flying training and Pilot Instructor Training in support of ENJJPT. The squadron flies 46 T-38s, flying more than 11,500 training sorties and 13,000 hours annually.
