In a time honored tradition, passing the torch to a new generation of leaders, a day of orientation for new squadron commanders and their spouses is set to be held at Sheppard, Aug. 15, 2014.

The purpose is to help new squadron commanders become familiar with Sheppard and the tools they can utilize to be effective leaders.

"We've got a lot of new squadron commanders that are new to Sheppard and are new to being squadron commanders," said Maj. Robert Brooks, 82nd Training Wing director of staff. "What we are trying to do is get them started off on the right foot so they understand exactly what their roles and responsibilities are."

The orientation day is an extension of an existing installation program that includes several briefs and highlights important locations so commanders can familiarize themselves better, faster.

What seems like an easy day to plan actually consists of a lot of moving parts.

"The biggest challenge is coordination, making sure everything goes together seamlessly for the participants" Brooks said. "You'd like them to not even know that there is anything going on behind the scenes."

The goal is for new commanders and their spouses to get a small taste of Sheppard's mission before taking the reins in their squadrons.

Throughout the day, participants will be involved in multiple briefs and panels that allow them to gain knowledge from former and active commanders.

"It gives them an opportunity to learn from people who have already walked that path," Brooks said.

This orientation gives the squadron commanders and their families the opportunity to learn more about the beneficial programs and resources that Sheppard offers.
