Holocaust 5K remembrance scheduled Published May 14, 2014 By 82nd Training Wing SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The 11 million lives lost in the Holocaust was one of the most horrific acts the world has ever seen. All of these lives were taken because of a deep seeded hatred toward other people. "Instead of simply treating the lessons of the Holocaust as history, we must pledge to be vigilant in determining to never let this happen again," said Capt. (Chaplain) Justin Combs, 82nd Training Wing chaplain. "Complacency is the enemy of vigilance, so we need to keep it front and center in our minds." The 82nd TRW chapel will be hosting the first of an annually planned Holocaust Memorial 5K run, May 20, 2014, as a way to remember the lives lost and lessons learned from this tragedy. The event will kickoff at 4 p.m. on the Sheppard parade field. This event is free to all participants. There will be a donation box for new or used shoes to give to a local mission. This will be a 5K to never forget! There will be a mile-long "moment of silence" during the run remembering those lives taken so tragically. The chapel is collecting new and used shoes to be used in a visual display to recognize the true impact of hate. The chaplain's office is calling on Team Sheppard to stand and say with one loud voice, "this will not happen on our watch!" For more information, call at 676-0077.
