Bioenvironmental Airmen participate in second annual appreciation week Published Jan. 31, 2014 82nd Training Wing Public Affairs SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The 82nd Medical Group held a base wide appreciation week for the Biomedical Science Corps from Jan. 27 through Jan. 31. Biomedical Science Corps Appreciation Week is a week dedicated to shining a light on what the BSC is and to spread awareness to what each individual shop does. BSCs are part of a unique corps of 17 distinct specialties all working together to provide clinical and scientific expertise for the Air Force Medical Service. "No other service has a BSC attached to it," said Capt. Lindsay Kotouch, a bio-environmental engineer operations chief. The first BSC appreciation week was held in March of last year since the BSC was established on March 15, 1965. Since the special order was signed on Jan. 28, 1965, the week of appreciation was moved to January. Throughout the week, activities and other events were held to show support and appreciation. The events were designed to be fun, but at the same time educational. Participation in the appreciation week wasn't limited to BSC members only. "It was open to all medical personnel," Kotouch said. Activities varied from scavenger hunts to educational briefings. The scavenger hunt was arranged by Tech Sgt. Andrea Flores, the bio energy engineer flight chief. "Hunters were given a clue with some information about one of the 17 BSC shops. They got to visit each shop and learn the importance of each shop," said Flores. "We gave away some gift cards to the winners." Members of the BSC were also treated to an ice cream social on Thursday. Educational briefings were held to inform and answer any questions about BSC shops. "We had Airmen from different BSC's provide briefings to the medical staff on exactly what we do," said Flores. Members of the BSC look forward to fun at the bowling alley for the conclusion of BSC Appreciation Week, while being part of a workplace with a storied heritage and diverse background.
