An airman from the 82nd Medical Support Squadron here was sentenced to a reprimand, three months hard labor, two months restriction to base, forfeiture of $600 a month for three months and a bad conduct discharge related to drug and obstruction charges during a special court-martial Jan. 9.

Airman Basic Syril Dl. Melvin IV was found guilty by the panel of eight officer and enlisted members of one specification of wrongful introduction of marijuana to Sheppard Air Force Base in violation of Article 112a of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), and one specification of conspiracy to obstruct justice, a violation of Article 81 of the UCMJ.

Melvin also pled guilty to one specification of wrongful use of marijuana, also a violation of Article 112a of the UCMJ.

Evidence presented showed Melvin tried to enter the base last Sep. 22 and submitted to a random vehicle inspection by Security Forces.  During the inspection, three grams of marijuana were found concealed behind the car's stereo.

As the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (OSI) looked into the incident and after being initally questioned by OSI, Melvin conspired with a civilian friend to make false statements to OSI in an effort to make them believe the drugs belonged to the civilian.
