Sheppard re-dedicated its historical marker Sept. 23, as part of a ceremony highlighting the relationship between Wichita Falls and the base.

The marker served as a reminder of Sheppard's original origins on April 17, 1941, when land approved by the local chamber of commerce was officially named Sheppard Field in honor of Senator Morris Sheppard.

"Wichita Falls and Sheppard have provided unparalleled support to the Air Force," said Brig. Gen. Scott Kindsvater, 82nd Training Wing commander.

Multiple community leaders and residents from the Wichita Falls community were present during the event in a show of solidarity.

"Our history is intertwined with Wichita Falls, and we (Air Force) thank them for their support," Kindsvater said.

As the Air Force's largest technical school training installation, Kindsvater commented on how cooperation between Sheppard and Wichita Falls was vital to the Air force mission.

"Every sortie our Air Force flies has felt the effect of Sheppard and this North Texas community," he said.
