Propulsion ACE shows academic excellence Published Sept. 10, 2013 By Airman 1st Class Jelani Gibson 82nd Training Wing Public Affairs SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Excellence has been achieved as an Airman who earned top honors here graduated from training Sept. 5. Airman 1st Class Matthew Schaar, a 361st Training Squadron aerospace propulsion student from Bolivair, Ohio, has earned the ACE award, given for maintaining a 100 percent average. Schaar, who is headed for Barksdale Air Force Base, La., has a passion for working on aircraft and mechanics. He feels he is in a good position to do something he likes and make a career out of it. "I was glad I did well, I understood the material," Schaar said. "I still have a lot more to learn." Staff Sgt. Billy Sasser, 361st TRS aerospace propulsion instructor, taught Schaar for all 5 blocks of testing and feels a sense of pride in his student's success. "I was happy," Sasser said. "He had that drive." Sasser wants his students to be successful in the classroom so they can carry on what they learned into the operational Air Force. "We want them (students) to be the best," he said. "Why not try to be the best right here?" Now that one of his students has achieved the ACE award, Sasser hopes it can set an example for others as well. "I can tell the rest of my class it can be done," he said. "If you do good here, there is no limit to how far you can go."
