As the summer continues to wind down, the Air Force "Critical Days of Summer" is nearing an end with only a couple more weeks to go.

During the 2013 fiscal year so far, Air Education and Training Command has received zero fatalities thus far, a feat that hasn't been accomplished since 2010.

During the campaign last fiscal year, in AETC alone, 303 mishaps happened, two of those were fatalities. Investigations totaled the estimated cost of mishap injuries at $1,163,859 and 1,134 workdays in AETC were lost due to safety mishaps.

"It's important to know what is going on with our fellow brothers and sisters," said Tech. Sgt. Brandon Trollman, 82nd Training Wing safety noncommissioned officer in charge.

Across the Air Force the total numbers of fatalities so far are at 14, with 10 of those being vehicular accidents, six of which involved motorcycles as the form of transportation. With more than a month to go, this is up from last year's number of 13 fatalities.

For those at Sheppard it is the act of getting the message that serves as a teaching tool for increasing the safety of Airmen. The 82nd TRW safety office looks at fatalities and mishaps as something that can have a trickle-down effect.

"We try to educate them and give them the tools they need," said Staff Sgt. Summer Reza, 82nd Training Wing safety technician. "If it affects your job, it affects the Air Force."
