Sheppard leadership held a tour for more than seven incoming squadron commanders July 9.

The objective of the tour was to familiarize new commanders with the 82nd Training Wing and 80th Flying Training Wing missions and introduce them to the Air Education and Training Command way of life.

Orienting new commanders usually takes place at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, but in a cost-conscious climate, the new leadership received briefings at Sheppard instead.

The incoming commanders saw how many on-base residents live as they visited the officers dorms and Freedom Estates. In the afternoon they were informed on fundraising, social media and other programs beneficial to the base.

"It's a fabulous jump-start leading into command," said Lt. Col. Jeff White, 366th Training Squadron's incoming commander. "I get to feel the pulse of the team."

White has faith in enlisted Airman and their ability to get the job done and thinks that giving them the chance to prove themselves is beneficial.

"Our enlisted corps is highly respected," he said. "I'm going to give them that margin of space so they can do the right thing."

With the tour culminating at the 80th Flying Training Wing showing incoming commander's how the international students at the wing's Euro-Nato Joint Jet Pilot Training program interact with each other. He looked at joint cooperation as something that will hold a great amount of importance in the future.

"This is the model of the future Air Force," he said. White believes that a motivated workplace one of the keys to meeting an expectation of excellence.

"It makes the difference when you put your all into your job," White said. "We're supposed to inspire.
