Listeriosis is a serious illness usually caused by eating foods contaminated with listeria monocytogenes bacteria.  Listeriosis generally causes symptoms such as a high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.  Young children, pregnant women, elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems are especially at risk for developing a very serious and potentially fatal infection.  Listeria infections can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
