6/29/2012 - SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas --
Team Sheppard,
As we enter into the 6th week and half way mark for the Critical Days of Summer, I want to remind you of this year's theme: "Safety - It's Personal."
This hits home especially hard as we mourn the recent loss of one of our own in a motorcycle accident just two weeks ago. Motorcycle riders, please ensure that you are wearing the proper protective gear - what happens to you is personal for us and all those who care about you.
With the 4th of July approaching, remember that fireworks are not allowed within the city limits, so take advantage of the opportunity Freedom Fest gives to the base and the local community. If you do intend to set off your own fireworks where it's legal to do so, please be extremely cautious so that your celebration doesn't turn into a tragedy.
To all the lake people out there like me, please have fun but be familiar with Texas' laws. Anyone operating a boat should ensure they are following all rules and regulations and have proper floatation devices. Take care in this Texas heat and be sure to stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun.
If you plan to participate in high-risk recreational activities you must inform your chain of command and complete the appropriate paperwork.
Whatever you plan to do, please be smart regarding your use of alcohol. Adding too many drinks to any of the above activities dramatically increases the likelihood of serious injury or worse.
Each member of Team Sheppard plays a crucial role in our mission and Air Force family. So please be smart, safe, use sound judgment and have a WINGMAN in everything that you do. As we learned just two weeks ago, it is indeed very personal.
