Col. Hake helps to lead largest AETC wing Published July 9, 2009 By Airman 1st Class Candy Miller 82nd Training Wing Public Affairs SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- It didn't take long for new 82nd Training Wing Vice Commander Col. Michael Hake to realize what his new assignment entails- helping to lead the Air Force's largest technical training facility and one that has a huge impact on the service. During our discussions he said his goals as the Vice are to continue the good relations with the local communities and the 80th Flying Training Wing, maintain an environment conducive to learning for the Airmen in Training, and put the AiT on the right path for their Air Force careers. "Having such a large variety of training roles and responsibilities at Sheppard creates the opportunity for us to have a major impact on the Air Force," he said. "(The 82nd is) the biggest (Air Education and Training Command) wing." Colonel Hake described his past experiences training future Airmen as a curriculum developer, Electronic Warfare Instructor, and Chief of Academics in previous assignments. "My experience gives me a solid foundation in understanding Sheppard's mission," he said. "I really believe in the importance of Sheppard's mission." Colonel Hake's previous leadership positions have prepared him for his current leadership role. His experience in the joint and multinational arenas, and most recently as a Test Director for U.S. Strategic Command, has given him a unique perspective in training Airmen for future operational assignments. He said he will use that experience to prepare Sheppard's AiT who will depart to joint service assignments and future deployments. "Bottom line, we have been successful in training these Airmen, and will continue to do so," the new vice commander said. Colonel Hake said he is also paying close attention to 82 TRW Commander Brig. Gen. O.G. Mannon to learn what's happening at Sheppard, so he can better perform his duties as deputy to the general. "I listen closely to the general as he shares Sheppard's mission and his vision in briefings with our newest AiT, permanent party, and community leaders," he said. "I'm looking forward to being a part of Team Sheppard and succeeding in the mission and goals." The colonel said he wants to get to know each of the squadrons and groups. He also said he wants to ask and be asked about concerns. "If you see me and have a question, bring it up," he said. Colonel Hake provided some words of advice for AiT that have just arrived from basic military training. He said Airmen should take advantage of their training and networking to develop friendships that will last throughout their career and lifetimes. The vice commander said in order for the AiT to thrive, permanent party Airmen need to do their part as well. "Prepare our AiT and ensure you're putting them on the right path towards success," he said. "Set the standards for dress and appearance, customs and courtesies, and live our core values." Colonel Hake also said he wants all Airmen to remember three keys to success. "We joined the Air Force for many reasons, but at the end of the day we need to accomplish our mission, ensure our families know we love them, and be part of the communities in which we live. I wouldn't be here today, but for the enduring love and support of my wife, Chris" he said. He said he and his family look forward to becoming actively involved in their new community through their church, activities with their three sons, and the other wonderful opportunities to be found in the communities surrounding Sheppard AFB.
